This painting was sold out of a lot of 13 works described as Hofmann School (from a Teaneck, NJ estate) by East Coast Fine Arts in 2018.   It is unsigned and undated as with so many of Holst’s works.  Among the other lots, (quite evidently by various artists and most annotated Hofmann School), one was marked “Aug 30, 1948…Provincetown,” another “P-town, 1951,” and a third signed and dated “‘52.” This painting is almost the mirror of “Theme 1-65, Variation 7” and the dates recorded spanned Holst’s three summers at the school

William Holst, Oil on Canvas, ca 1940s, 36” x 48”, private collection, Barnstable, Cape Cod – -possibly, Holst’s thesis painting.
Let’s remain a while in the black and white time machine. Consider the vintage of the subject cars, the urban setting, the medium (and support), and what we know about Holst ca. 1930-34. A logical conclusion would be this is a student drawing, in Boston, during his time at MassArt. He graduated there in 1934. In “Haystack at Liberty” Alana VanDerwerker shares that in an interview Holst “described his youth and schooling. It was the depression but his parents nevertheless encouraged him to aim to attend art school…. ‘I never intended to teach’ but teaching became the way to pay for painting artworks of his own inspiration rather than illustration”. Holst, untitled, charcoal on paper, ca 1934, 8 1/2″ x 12″ (courtesy of Farrin’s Auction).
This could very well be a student work from @massartboston. Holst, untitled, charcoal on paper, ca 1930s – undated, 25″ x 19″ (courtesy of Farrin’s Auction).
